The start of each year can feel very daunting; 2023 especially feels that way for so many of us because of everything we have been through the past 3 years. Every year to ease my nerves about what is to come, I pull out my trusted Tarot deck (I use The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck by Kim Krans) and do a little energy forecast for my year ahead. This year I decided to do one for the collective so we can see what we’re working with heading into 2023.

Something to note about the collective is that we are a part of it but it doesn’t always mean the collective will influence our energy directly. We also have our own personal energy that impacts our path and our emotions along the way. Even if the collective energy doesn’t influence you directly, it may still influence those around you and the world at large. It’s great to notice how your energy is relating to the bigger picture and gain some tips on what to spiritually pack with you as you head into each month. So here we go — let’s see what 2023 has in store for you and me!

Overall Card for the Year — Daughter of Cups

  • Creative energy
  • Taking inspiration from our surroundings
  • Being gentle with ourselves in the face of conflict

The Daughter of Cups can be a very emotional card, making it hard to stay grounded. We must remember to be gentle with ourselves as we swim in our emotional depths this year and allow them to inspire creative breakthroughs instead of breakdowns. If you’re an empath, you will need extra gentleness and to ensure you create supportive surroundings for yourself as you navigate the collective waters of 2023.

January — Mother of Wands

  • Vibrancy
  • Protecting your gifts and what you want to build
  • Honoring what you have overcome

The Mother of Wands involves honoring the trauma you have overcome in your life with grace but force when needed. Take the time to decide what you want to build this year and see how you can protect your dreams. Don’t be afraid if others are intimidated by your desires. They are yours to honor and protect.

February — Son of Wands

  • “Perfection is an illusion”
  • Trust your instincts

The Son of Wands can be very persuasive. This could represent an opportunity or person who has a lot of charisma but something feels off. Trust yourself and get more information. If it seems too good to be true, it might be.

March — Son of Swords Reversed

  • Restless
  • Unfocused
  • Burnt-Out

You may be filled with energy that has no place to go during this time. Whether you’re waiting on divine timing or someone else, find other ways to release this energy. It could be through physical movement, a new hobby, journaling, etc. Avoid forcing in this time and making rash decisions. Simplify as much as you can.

April — 10 of Wands Reversed

  • Carrying burdens that are not yours
  • Doing it all

It’s time to let go of carrying other peoples’ burdens and/or messes. You have enough to deal with in this time. If you are feeling a heaviness and confused about the source, start by asking yourself “Is this mine?” If not, say out loud “This is not mine to carry” and let it release from your life, your emotions, and your to-do list. Delegate and share your burdens with those you trust to support you. You don’t have to do it all alone. What feels heavy and how can you lighten the load?

May — 8 of Cups

  • Nothing left for you
  • Let what is broken be broken
  • Move on

8 of Cups is a reminder that it’s time to stop trying to put the pieces back together. Just like the image shows, if you keep drinking from broken cups, you will get cut. Similarly, if you continue going back to the same sources of hurt in your life, you will experience the same pain. Move forward to brighter horizons.

June — The Empress

  • Goddess Energy
  • Embracing the side of you that wants more love
  • Unconditional love/ “loving without binding”

As a reward for moving through the heaviness of the past few months, June comes with the welcome gift of The Empress. She helps us connect with our goddess nature and receive the unconditional love we need to set ourselves and our hearts on fire. If you had a difficult relationship with your mother at any point in your life, you may find healing maternal energy flowing to you now from another source (whether that is nature, another person, or even yourself as you reparent your inner child.)

July — 9 of Pentacles Reversed

  • Self-Worth
  • Stop accepting less than what you’re worth
  • Step up and into your value

9 of Pentacles comes to remind us that we are enough. We are deserving. Notice where you are hustling too hard for others and forgetting yourself. You don’t always have to work harder to receive more. Take the time to invest in yourself.

August — Mother of Cups

  • Psychic abilities
  • Defensiveness
  • Releasing victimhood

The power of the Mother of Cups comes from leaning more deeply into your intuitive gifts. This month asks us to do the same. Notice when you feel distressed this month and rather than becoming defensive or seeing yourself as the victim, embrace your psychic responsibility to find peaceful resolution.

September — 9 of Swords Reversed

  • Negative thoughts
  • Inner turmoil
  • Worrying

Notice how your thoughts are making things harder for yourself. Much of the pain we experience comes from the meaning our minds make of things. Try taking things at face value and stating them as facts instead of spiraling. For example, if a friend doesn’t text you back right away, instead of concluding that they hate you or you did something wrong, try stating it as a fact — “they haven’t texted me back yet” period. Don’t let your worries create your reality.

October — 8 of Pentacles

  • Confidence in your abilities
  • Mastery
  • Developing your skills

Now is the time to weave your web in the world for all to see. Take this time to develop new skills and hobbies — you may find things you’re great at that you never knew before. This can also be a magical time for gifts from past lifetimes to find you. Honor your gifts; the world needs them.

November — Wheel of Fortune

  • Destiny
  • Welcome change

Ooo baby. For those of us who showed up and honored our gifts last month, destiny is calling. Your purpose is ready to start weaving with you. Trust in divine timing — energies are more complex than they seem but if things have felt stuck or stagnant for a while, fresh energy is coming in to bring welcome changes. Embrace the shifts that happen as you align more deeply with your destiny.

December — Father of Cups

  • Insecurities
  • Stay open minded

You may find yourself swimming in insecurities this month. Know that regardless of how you see yourself, there are others who see you as highly capable and distinguished. Don’t let imposter syndrome win. Keep swimming.

Every year has its challenges and gifts. Know that you will be given everything you need to navigate the months ahead along the way. Take it one day, one month at a time and set your own pace.
